Worried right now? If your gums bleed on their own, there is pus or a bump on the gum, a gum is swollen, a tooth feels loose, you have pain, or a tooth looks longer within weeks, do not wait for an app. See your dentist soon. Swelling of the face or jaw with a fever needs care the same day.

Using GumScout

How does a check-in work?

Take four photos: front with the lips pulled back, left side and right side with the teeth biting together, and the lower front teeth close up with the lip pulled down. A faint ghost of last month's photo sits over the camera so the angle matches. Answer a few quick questions about bleeding, sensitivity and anything sudden. The photos are read, and in a few seconds you get a GumScout stage as a range, a Gum Score for each zone, the signs the AI can see, a comparison with your last check-in, and one of four verdicts. Every check-in is saved to your timeline on your phone.

What do the four verdicts mean?

A safety layer can only raise the verdict, never lower it. Your first check-in is a baseline, so it can never read Changing.

What is the GumScout stage?

A consumer scale from 0 to 4, judged by how much root shows below the enamel edge. 0 is no recession seen, 1 is a thin band of root on one or two teeth, 2 is root clearly showing on a few teeth, 3 is root on several teeth with notches or triangles, 4 is long roots on many teeth with the gum between teeth lost. It comes as a range with a confidence level, because a photo leaves doubt. A dentist may use other scales, such as Miller or Cairo, which need a probe and an X-ray. The stage checker explains every stage.

What is the Gum Score?

A 0 to 100 estimate for each zone of how close the gum line sits to the enamel edge, where 100 is right at the edge. It shows direction over months. It is a guide for you, not a dental measurement; a dentist measures recession in millimeters with a probe.

How do I take photos the app can trust?

The dentist visit prep page has the full four-angle guide and checklist.

How many free check-ins do I get?

2 in total: a baseline and one comparison. The timeline and the guide stay free, with or without Pro.

How do I make a report for my dentist?

With GumScout Pro, open Today and tap Dentist report. Choose the last 3, 6 or 12 months, or everything, with or without photos. The PDF is made on your phone and shared through the iOS share sheet.

How far to trust it

How reliable is GumScout?

An honest answer: GumScout gives an AI estimate from photos. It is not a dental exam and cannot diagnose gum disease. It looks at what a photo can show, like a band of root above the gum, a triangle between teeth or a notch at the gum line. It cannot measure pocket depth, see bone, or find the cause. Light, the angle of the phone, how far the lip is pulled back and whitened teeth can all fool it. Use it as a consistent pair of eyes that remembers what your gum line looked like 3 and 6 months ago, not as the final word.

Is this a diagnosis?

No. GumScout is not a dentist and not a medical device. It does not identify, name or rule out any condition, and it does not recommend any treatment, product or dose. A dentist can confirm what is going on.

Can GumScout make my gums grow back?

No. Gums that have moved away from a tooth do not grow back on their own, and no app can change that. What usually helps is stopping it getting worse, and a dentist or periodontist is who decides how. GumScout shows you whether it is moving.

When should I see a dentist instead of taking another photo?

Soon: gums that bleed on their own, pus, a pimple or a bump on the gum, a swollen gum, a loose tooth or one that has moved, pain, or a tooth that looks longer within weeks. Same day: swelling of the face or jaw with a fever. In the next few weeks: root showing on several teeth, a stage up against 3-month-old photos, a verdict of Changing twice in a row, or no dental visit in over a year with root showing.

Privacy and your data

Where do my photos go?

When you run a check-in, your photos travel over an encrypted connection to our server, which sends them to Google Gemini to be read and returns the result to your phone. We do not store photos on our servers; they are held in memory only for the request. The app asks for your OK, and names Google Gemini, before the first photo is sent. The full details are in our privacy policy.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no account, no login and no email address to give. GumScout has no ads and no tracking.

Where is my timeline stored?

On your phone only. There is no copy on our servers, so if you delete the app, the timeline goes with it. If you move to a new iPhone, it comes along only if it is included in your own iPhone backup or transfer.

How do I delete my data?

In the app, open Settings and tap Delete my data. This erases your check-ins, photos, reads and notes from your phone and replaces the anonymous id with a new one. Deleting the app does the same. There are no photos or timelines on our servers to delete. If you would also like your purchase record removed from RevenueCat, our subscription service, email us.

Purchases

What does Pro cost?

As of October 2026, $29.99 a year with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers, $4.99 a month, or $44.99 once for lifetime access. These are US prices; prices in other countries are set through the App Store and may differ.

How do I restore purchases?

Open GumScout, go to Settings or the Pro screen, and tap Restore purchases. Make sure you are signed in to the App Store with the same Apple ID you used to buy Pro.

How do I cancel my subscription?

On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose GumScout and tap Cancel Subscription. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date, or before the free trial ends, to avoid being charged. Pro stays on until the end of the period you paid for. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

Can I get a refund?

Purchases are made through Apple, so refunds are handled by Apple. You can request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. If something went wrong, email us too and we will help where we can.
